The Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program is designed to help low income residents save fuel and money, while increasing the comfort of their homes. This program will hire experienced contractors to seal cracks with weather stripping and caulk; insulate attics and walls; repair or replace windows and doors; and clean, repair, or replace furnaces. The program includes an energy audit of the home to determine which weatherization improvements should be done to maximize the energy savings for each home.
The Weatherization Assistance Program will be available to families making up to 200% of the federal poverty level—or about $44,000 a year for a family of four. Weatherization projects allow low-income families to save money by making their homes more energy efficient, which results in average savings of 32% for heating bills and savings of hundreds of dollars per year on overall energy bills. States will spend an average of $6,500 to weatherize each home.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) provided a large increase in weatherization funds over past years’ weatherization programs, allocating $242,526,619 to the State of Illinois. It also increased the eligible family income level from 150% to 200% of the federal poverty level so more families can benefit from this program. These funds are dispersed through various local agencies, with the Village of Woodridge being served by DuPage County Department of Human Services.
